Video/installation by Xiaoze Xie

2011 · 12 min 30 sec

Depicting the flight of books through the air in slow motion, the video was inspired by book-burning events through history, addressing the challenges to memory, knowledge and intellectual discourse presented by changing times. Theatrically lit from below, the books glow as they roll, their pages unraveling. The disturbingly graceful movement is enhanced by a soundtrack. Adapted elements from an old Chinese guqin piece Ping Sha Luo Yan ("Wild Geese Descend on the Sandbank") were recorded by Wang Fei under the direction of Jarosław Kapuściński and re-edited with the video.
